Expository Essay ~ Effects of Cell Phones

Effects of Cell Phones

Glass covered the newly paved road, and all he could remember was trying to pull himself out of his brand new Chevy truck with his Iphone 6 in the palm of his hand. He stared down at his cell phone realizing that he could have just killed himself, all because he heard the “Ding!” of his phone and quickly reached for it. Texting has become one of the world’s largest death-causing accidents. Cell phones have affected people’s lives positively for long distance relationships, but negatively for car accidents.

Cell phones can be positive for when someone has family or friends that live far away. For example, my best friend,Dana, lives in Arkansas, and since she lives so far away,I don’t get to see her every weekend. However, since I have a cell phone,I’m able to dial up her number anytime and have a long conversation with her being 1,000 miles away.Just like my friend in Arkansas, people have family all over the world and not everyone is within driving distance.Another positive thing about cell phones is that when you have an emergency, you can quickly dial 9-1-1 and get help fast. The other day, my grandpa was having a bad allergic reaction to some medicine that he took, and he couldn’t drive himself to the hospital, so he got out his phone and called for an ambulance.

Negatively, cell phones have increased the number of car accidents in just a year. While driving in the car, people often hear their phones go off, and their first instinct is to quickly snatch it up and read their new message, or try out their new app. Suddenly, they find themselves injured, or almost killing themselves. Some people do die from car accidents.About a year ago, a family friend of ours was driving home from the store , and he checked his phone, within an instance, he had crashed into an oak tree, and it killed him. Another negative flaw about cell phones is that it’s a big distraction during school.Looking around, all I can see is people on their cell phones during class, not paying one bit of attention to the teacher. That might be the reason that students don’t pass tests.

Cell phones have become one of the world’s largest distractions in the past year or two.Cell phones affect people’s lives every day, whether it’s positive or negative. Maybe one day , cell phone usage will decrease in school,or around the world.

Expository Essay ~ Effects of Fear

Effects of Fear

Riding down the road, sitting in the passenger seat, Tom looks over to the next car and notices that they are texting instead of paying attention to the road. Tom tells his dad to pull over because he is afraid one of them will get hurt. Just like Tom,we are afraid sometimes, but it’s not always good to be scared.Fear can affect people’s lives positively by making them afraid when danger is near, and negatively by  making them miss opportunities.

When danger is near, fear can help us know what to do,whether it’s to tell us to run or to call for help. For example,my friend,Cecilia was riding her bike down the street one day ,and came upon a man brutally beating his four year old daughter.Cecilia then feels the need to pedal faster so that she can get home and tell someone before she, or anyone else gets hurt. She wants to save the innocent little girl, but she fears that she might get beaten. In these kinds of situations, fear is a great quality that might save someone else’s life.

In addition, fear can sometimes be controlling and make people miss opportunities. For example,Amy was always afraid to talk to people. On the day of her big job interview, the boss would ask her important questions and she would nod in the place of a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Amy didn’t get the opportunity to work there because of her fear of talking.Like Amy, I was once very shy. One day in math class, the teacher asked if anyone had any questions. Although I did, I kept my mouth shut and my hand in my lap.I missed an opportunity to get help because I was too scared to raise my hand and ask the question. In these instances, fear can be a poor quality to have.

It’s okay to pull over like Tom because people may be afraid of getting hurt, but nobody should ever let fear affect them in a way that could cause them to miss an opportunity.

Expository Essay ~ Importance of Learning to Read

Importance of Learning to Read

As Andrew was sitting in his English 1 class with the worn-out I-don’t-care-what-you-are-saying look on his face, Mrs. Mckinney turns and looks directly at him.”Andrew, please read the next paragraph aloud to the class,”Mrs. Mckinney ordered.Andrew acted all cool in front of his “squad” until he couldn’t pronounce the first word on the page.He stared at the teacher in utter embarrassment. In our world today, believe it or not, there are people that have no clue how to read.Reading is one of the most important skills that everybody should learn because it will save them from embarrassment and it will help them in the real world.

Being embarrassed because someone is illiterate is unacceptable. For example,my clueless friend,Connor, was picked to be “reader of the day” and when Mrs. Barnes told him to read the first question, he looked at her with a what-does-that-even-mean face. His face turned fifty shades of red from embarrassment. The lack of knowledge to read can be humiliating.Just like Conner, there are other people, not necessarily fifteen-year-olds,who have embarrassing moments from failing to learn to read.Likewise,an elderly gentleman walks into what he thinks is the Washateria on Stone Road, but is actually walking into The Exxon on the corner of Stone Road.He couldn’t read the signs, therefore, he went to the wrong place. Accidents like these are avoidable, but embarrassing.Embarrassments like these can be prevented by learning to read.

Learning to read can also help people further their knowledge in the real world. To illustrate, David is driving his convertible 2015 Mustang to Arkansas, but he is lost in the midst of a million trees and a bunch of signs he can’t read. He feels lost, hopeless, and dull because he can’t read the signs to continue on his journey to The Natural State. Activities, such as driving, require the knowledge to know how to read. Also, knowing how to read can help people get jobs and promotions. If I didn’t know how to read, I couldn’t fill out a job application at Brookshire’s because I wouldn’t be able to read the questions,so I can just kiss that opportunity for a temporary job goodbye. When doing huge tasks like these, it is super important to learn how to read. Life-long opportunities like jobs, promotions, and passing a college class can all be improved by learning to read.

When it comes to the embarrassment Andrew faced, or failing to obtain employment like myself, learning to read is one of the most important aspects of our life.

You Might Think Poem

You might think I’m just

an ordinary fifteen-year-old girl

with brown hair

and light skin

But i am way more than that

I’m not Miss Smarty-pants and definitely

not a typical freshman

I am

a Froot Loop

in a world of

Cheerios

A round,purple Froot Loop.

When I’m out and about,

I stand out when i dance around like an

Idiot

I grab people’s attention

they stop and stare at

the beautifully-colored Froot Loop

swimming around in the bowl

of milk with the

bland-colored Cheerios

But when I look around,

I notice that I am

Unique

I am the last loop scooped up into the spoon because

everyone likes to save the

Best

for last

I am a single individual

that keeps trying and trying

and trying

to not stand out in a

Spoonful of other people
