Topic? Black Friday sales down

Title? Black Friday Sales Down More Than $1 Billion

Source? http://time.com/4128592/black-friday-sales-down/

Summary? According to Shoppertrak, many people have gone from physically going to stores on Black Friday to strictly finding deals online. They call this Cyber Monday, and it supposively gives some better deals than stores themselves do. This could be caused for many reason and it can also cause many problems.

Effects me? I went Black Friday shopping last year and it was crazy. THis year my aunt and my mom went together and they said it was a little better, but not much. At home, it causes internet to be slower on Cyber Monday because everyone is online. For example, last night, I was trying to get some homework done and it kept telling me that this website was not available.

Affects world? The only way i can see this affecting the world is by people being scared to leave their homes. People are scared from previous years they they are going to get shot up or something. Some people believe that ISIS is the problem. Racism could be a major problem too. There is way too much fear around the world nowadays because of all the crime that is happening.

Topic? Giving birth vs. college exam due.

Title? Mother- to- be- labor overs college exam at hospital in Georgia just before giving birth

Source? http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/11/20/mother-to-be-labor-overs-college-exam-at-hospital-in-georgia-just-before-giving/

Summary? Pregnant college student has contractions every three minutes, but also has an exam due within hours. How does she handle this? She works hard on her exam while sitting in a hospital bed to give birth.

Effects me? This doesn’t effect me in a way to say that i’m pregnant. I’m not, this just shows that some people can work hard. I am a hard worker and I would probably do the same exact thing. I always try to do my homework and I always try even when I want to hang out with my friends. This woman shows backbreaking work.

Topic? Student arrested for racial threat

Title? Online threats against blacks nets arrest at Missouri campus

Source?http://www.kltv.com/story/30488698/online-threats-against-blacks-net-arrest-at-missouri-campus

Summary? On Tuesday November 10th, 2015, a white college student was arrested at 2:00 am because she posted on a social media site that she was going to “ shoot every black person {she} sees”. The racial tensions caused two main administrators to resign, and most of the students with black roommates say they wanted to stay safe so they skipped class that day. the student still hasn’t seen a judge yet due to Veteran’s Day.

Effects me? I couldn’t ever imagine this happening at our school. I have black friends, so of course i’m against this. In my opinion, this is basically begging for segregation. I believe the girl deserves to go to jail, because what if she was black and someone else was saying this? she would probably be scared and not want to come to school.

Affects the World? This shows how some people in our world are cruel. They don’t think about things nowadays before they post or say things. Although she probably wasn’t really gonna do anything considering they found no weapons on her. She was just putting on a show, but it turned into something bigger than that. people should really watch what they post.

  1. Topic? Few sent to Death Row
  2. Title? East Texan 2nd to be Sent to Death Row in 2015
  3. Source? http://www.kltv.com/story/30320367/east-texan-second-to-be-sent-to-death-row-in-2015
  4. Summary? There has been very few people to be sent to death row this year. One man who murdered his wife back in 2013 has just recently been the 2nd inmate to be sentenced to death in 2015. This has been the lowest number of inmates since 1990.
  5. Reaction? I hate seeing someone have to go through cruel punishment like this, but at this point, i’m thinking he deserves it. But why is it just now occurring, i mean it happened two years ago, it should have been done then. Also what about all the murderers now, are they being sentenced to death? This could come back as being unfair. In my honest opinion, if someone kills someone, they shouldn’t get to just sit in prison for years.
  6. Worldwide effect? This really isn’t worldwide, it’s more like a Texas thing. This actually could prove that our world is getting a little better considering the highest number of inmates to get sentenced to Death Row was in 2013 with 16 inmates. This year,2015, has only had two. There was only one year where no one was sentenced and that was in 1982. So speaking widely, the world kind of has bumps and curves, none year it can be good and the next terrible.

Journalism Vocabulary

Pixels ~  a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Image resolution ~  a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Megabyte ~ a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Megapixel ~ a unit of graphic resolution equivalent to one million or (strictly) 1,048,576 (220) pixels.

Gigabyte ~  a unit of information equal to one billion (109) or, strictly, 230 bytes.

Jpeg ~  a format for compressing image files.

Raw ~   a file that contains minimally processed data from theimage sensor of either a digital camera, image scanner, or motion picture film scanner.

Tiff ~  The ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality. This is not the case when using the TIFF as a container holding compressed JPEG.

PNG ~  (pronounced ping as in ping-pong; for Portable Network Graphics) is a file format for image compression that, in time, is expected to replace the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) that is widely used on today’s Internet.

Histogram ~  is a graphical representation of the distribution of numerical data. It is an estimate of the probability distribution of a continuous variable.

Aperture ~  a hole or an opening through which light travels.

Shutter speed ~ the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph. The amount of light that reaches the film or image sensor is proportional to the exposure time.

Depth of field ~  the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph.

Noise ~ The occurrence of color dots or specks where there should be none.

Lag time ~  Refers to latency, or lag measured by the difference between the time there is a signal input, and the time it takes the input to display on the screen.

Hot shoe ~  A mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories.

Fisheye ~  A lens of small focal length, having a highly curved protruding front element, that covers an angle of view of almost 180°.

Aperture priority ~ a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific aperture value while the camera selects a shutter speed to match, thereby ensuring proper exposure

Shutter priority ~  a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure.

Bitmap ~  mapping from some domain (for example, a range of integers) to bits, that is, values which are zero or one. It is also called a bit array or bitmap index.

White balance ~  the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo.

Exposure ~ the act of exposing, laying open, or uncovering:

Watermarking ~  a kind of marker covertly embedded in a noise-tolerant signal such as an audio, video or image data. It is typically used to identify ownership of the copyright of such signal.

Optical Zoom ~  allows you to zoom in (or out) on the subject in the LCD or viewfinder. This will enable you to get a closer view of the subject before taking your picture.

Macro ~ a lens suitable for taking photographs unusually close to the subject.

Telephoto ~ a lens with a longer focal length than standard, giving a narrow field of view and a magnified image.

Wide Angle ~ (of a lens) having a short focal length and hence a field covering a wide angle.

DSLR ~ A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called a digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.

Digital zoom ~  is a function of a digital camera used to make the image seem more close-up.Digital Zoom on a digital camera works the same as cropping and enlarging a photo in a graphics program.

Bracketing ~ place (one or more people or things) in the same category or group.

Light meter  ~ an instrument for measuring the intensity of light, used chiefly to show the correct exposure when taking a photograph.

Image stabilization ~ (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.

Dynamic Range ~ is the difference between the smallest and largest usable signal through a transmission or processing chain or storage medium. It is measured as a ratio, or as a base-10 (decibel) or base-2 (doublings, bits or stops) logarithmic value.

Digital Negative ~ (DNG) is an open lossless raw image format written by Adobe used for digital photography. It was launched on September 27, 2004.

Exposure Compensation ~ Exposure compensation is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image

Topic? 109-year-old veteran dies

Title? Funeral held in East Texas for oldest World War II veteran.

Source? http://www.kltv.com/story/30111591/funeral-held-for-oldest-world-war-two-veteran

Summary? This article basically tells a little bit about Elmer Everett HIll of Henderson. He was drafted into the US Navy when he was 35 and served until 1945. Last year, he was honored by  East Texas Residents when the City Of Henderson named a day after him.

Affects me? This makes me think about how it would feel to be this man. Before he died, he didn’t have any other veterans from WWII to talk to. Also, he probably doesn’t have much of his family left. He probably felt lonely before he did.

Affect the world? Dying is part of history. It’s eventually going to happen to everybody. Some old, some young, and he just happened to be old. Now there is no one left to tell about what the war was like. HIstory researchers now have no one else to get information from.

Title? Man Shot 7 Times Attempting to Stop Oregon Shooter

Source?

http://www.kltv.com/story/30173437/man-shot-7-times-attempting-to-to-stop-oregon-shooter

Summary? This article tells the story of a man who tried to save his students, but ended up getting wounded himself.  The Oregon College Shooting killed 10 people and left 7 people injured. This man is now known as a hero in Oregon.

Effects me?  This article makes me  happy to know that there are people out in the world that will risk their lives for someone else’s. I would never expect someone to risk their life for someone else, but if someone did, that person should be very thankful. THis article also scares me of what this world is coming to. I’ve been hearing about a lot of shootings going on here lately and it really just frightens me.

Effects World? This makes the world seem really terrible. I cant believe how many mass shootings there has been in the past year. I believe that this world is going to be the worst place by the time this next generation is gone.
